World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym, who decided to give up his titles in mid-July to move up to the flyweight division, is aiming at winning the WBC flyweight title, it was learned on July 29 in Kyoto.

Teraji (R) receives encouragement award from head of his supporters

The 32-year-old Teraji said, ‘’I will aim at winning the green belt (the WBC) ‘’ during the July 29 convivial gathering in the western Japanese city hosted by his supporters.

Teraji successfully defended the WBC light flyweight title four times and the WBA crown three times.

At present, the WBC flyweight title is vacant. Cristofer Rosales of Nicaragua is the WBC’s top-ranked flyweight.

Rosales challenged the then WBC flyweight champion Daigo Higa (of then Shirai-Gushiken Boxing Gym) in April 2018 and stopped Higa in the ninth round, although Higa filed to make the weight. Rosales lost the title in his second title defense in December that year.

Teraji said, ‘’I am determined to win the flyweight title as well and will aim at becoming the undisputed champion.’’

While Teraji hurt his right hand in his title defense in January this year against top-ranked WBA light flyweight Carlos Canizales of Venezuela, he started training in May after having a surgery on his injured part so much so that he can now have sparring sessions.

Teraji is now putting teeth into his defense as he said, ‘’I will do the kind of boxing in which I will not be hit too much as I am horning my defense capability.’’

Undisputed world super bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’the Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym started sparring sessions with two new Mexican partners at the gym on July 29 in preparation for his next title defense against the World Boxing Organization’s second-ranked super bantamweight TJ Doheny of Ireland on Sept. 3 at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena.

(from L to R, Valenzuela, Inoue and Garcia)

Inoue went a total of eight rounds of sparring with Noli Valenzuela and Jose Angel Garcia, both undefeated featherweights. It was the third time for Garcia to visit Japan. The 31-year-old Inoue had been sparring with other two Mexican partners until this week.

Inoue made a comment through the gym in the form of the question-and-answer session as follows:

Q: what about the sparring today?

A: I was able to move throughout the eight rounds against the two partner (each for four rounds). I think I got a good response, including my stamina.

Q: Didn’t you feel any fatigue due to the possible after-effects of the intensive training camp at the gym two weeks ago?

A: I already got rid of my fatigue and was able to do sparring with the new Mexican partners.

Q: It was the first time for you to spar with Valenzuela. Any comment?

A: Since I have sparred with many boxers, I make it a rule to adjust myself to each boxer. It is not easy to think only about Doheny. I can become much more versatile if I spar with different kind of partners. True Doheny has a one-punch knockout power and may not be timed nicely. But if I can cope with each and different sparring partner, I think I can cope with any situation in the fight.

Q: Doing eight rounds of sparring at a time appears to be a little too long. Do you often do that?

A: I sparred with eight rounds last Thursday. I will concentrate on sparring this week and the next. After the middle of August, I will make a minor adjustment. I mean I will reduce the number of my sparring sessions and will go on with fine-tuning.

Q: Have you already seen Doheny’s fight video?

A: I saw the two of his three fights he did in Japan except his fight at Tokyo Dome. I saw his fight with Japhethlee Llamido (of the United States last October) and Kazuki Nakajima (of Ohashi gym in June last year). Since Llamido and Nakajima are left-handed, I don’t think I can imagine my fight with Doheny. I also saw his fight with Sam Goodman of Australia (in March 2023, in which Doheny dropped a 10-round decision). But I think I understand the kind of Doheny’s style of boxing, it will all depend on how to fight with him in the actual ring.

Q: What about your present mind and body?

A: I think I have been able to maintain my motivation ever since my last fight at Tokyo Dome (in which Inoue stopped Luis Nery of Mexico in the sixth round to retain his titles).

Top-ranked International Boxing Federation minimumweight challenger Pedro Taduran of the Philippines, unleashing a barrage of right and left combinations to the head and body, stopped Ginjiro Shigeoka of Watanabe Boxing Gym in the ninth round to wrest the title on July 28 in Shiga Prefecture, western Japan.

Shigeoka (R) hit by Taduran’s left

The technical knockout of the scheduled 12-rounder at the Shiga Daihatsu Arena in the prefecture’s Otsu City came 2 minutes and 50 seconds into the round when the left-handed Tduran connected with unanswered blows to the head and body by putting Shigeoka, also a southpaw, against the ropes, which prompted the referee to step in to call off the fight.

The 24-year-old Shigeoka’s damage was such he was carried out on a stretcher to a hospital, although there was no serious damage to his health. With the defeat, Shigeoka failed in his third defense of the title he won by knocking out Taduran’s compatriot Rene Mark Cuarto in April last year.

This is the second time for the 27-year-old Taduran to capture the IBF minimumweight crown as he won the then vacant title in 2019 by stopping Samuel Salva of the Philippines. He lost the title in 2021 to fellow Filipino Rene Mark Cuarto in his second title defense.

After the fight, Taduran said through an interpreter, ‘’I have trained very hard for this particular fight in the past three months. Though he (Shigeoka) was a good fighter, I came here to win the title.’’

Shigeoka suffered a nosebleed in the second round with his right eyelid beginning to be closed in the fifth stanza due to Taduran’s overhand lefts.

Though Shigeoka occasionally connected with right hooks to the body, it was Taduran who came out even stronger by unleashing powerful punches to the head and body.

Shigeoka’s damage was such, the referee appeared to have been seeking an opportunity to stop the fight.

With the victory, Taduran improved his record to 17 wins, including 13 KOs, against four losses and a draw. For his part, it was Shigeoka’s first loss after winning his first 11 bouts, nine by KO.

World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Junto Nakatani of M.T Boxing Gym knocked out top-ranked challenger Vincent Astrolabio of the Philippines in the first round to retain the title in Tokyo.

It was the 26-year-old Nakatani’s first successful defense of the title he captured from Alexandro Santiago of Mexico with a sixth-round technical knockout for his third world title in as many different weight classes last February.

The KO of the scheduled 12-rounder at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena came 2 minutes and 37 seconds into the round when the left-handed Nakatani landed a straight left to the body after throwing a right jab, which floored Astrolabio.

While Astrolabio struggled to his feet once, he fell down to the canvas again due apparently to a pain, and the referee counted him out.

After the fight, Nakatani said, ‘’I think that was a little too fast. I will try hard to continue to show a good performance. I think my fans hope to watch me have a title unification bout (with the champions of the three other major sanctioning bodies). What do you think?’’

The fight was held as the main event of the extravaganza dubbed ‘’Prime Video Presents Live Boxing 9.’’

Nakatani extended his unbeaten streak to 28 wins, including 21 KOs, whereas the 27-year-old Astrolabio impaired to a 19-5 win-loss record with 14 KOs.

The technical knockout of the scheduled 10-rounder fought at the catchweight of 54.4 kgs (120 lbs) came 1 minute and 49 seconds into the round when the left-handed Nasukawa sent Rodriguez down on his back with a barrage of right-left combinations. While Rodriguez wobbled to his feet, the referee called off the fight.

After the fight, Nasukara, ranked seventh in the division by the WBA, said, ‘’I finally did it. Who said that I cannot achieve a KO win? I did everything I could for this moment. I am a little happy now because I was able to achieve the result. I did not feel any impact when I landed the last decisive punch. That’s the way it was. I will keep evolving.’’

Nasukawa almost decked Rodriguez shortly before the end of the second round with a straight left to the head. But Rodriguez survived as the bell ending the round rang soon after.

With the win, the 25-year-old Nasukawa now has four straight wins, two by KO, while Rodriguez, also, 25, fell to a 17-3-1 win-loss-draw tally with seven KOs.

While the left-handed Kano fought well earlier in the fight by throwing right hooks to the head and straight lefts to the body, Olascuaga had more punching power than Kano.

Olascuaga unsuccessfully challenged World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym for the latter’s titles in April last year.

After the day’s fight, Olascuaga said his dream came true as he wanted to come out strong from the opening bell, adding he thought he was able to show a fine performance as Kano had been a good boxer.

With the win, the 25-year-old Olascuaga improved his record to seven wins, including five KOs, against a loss. For his part, Kano, 26, sagged to a 17-4-1 win-loss-draw tally with eight KOs.

Issei Aramoto of Teiken gym, who captured a total of as many as 12 amateur titles during his high school and university days, made a successful professional debut at super middleweight as he stopped Mongontsooj Nandinerdene of Mongolia in the sixth and the final round in the opening bout of the event.

The technical KO came 1 minute and 9 seconds into the round when the 24-year-old Aramoto dropped his 37-year-old opponent with a left hook to the head, prompting the referee to call off the fight immediately.
The technical knockout of the scheduled 12-rounder at Korakuen Hall came 2 minutes and 54 seconds into the round when Utsuki landed a devastating left hook to the head, staggering Suzuki and pummeled Suzuki with a barrage of combination blows by putting him against the ropes, prompting the referee to stop the fight.

It was the 30-year-old Utsuki’s second straight victory over Suzuki as he stopped Suzuki, 29, in the ninth round to capture the then vacant Japanese lightweight title about two years and a half ago.

With the defeat, Suzuki failed in his first defense of the title he won last January with a first-round TKO win over Roldan Aldea of the Philippines for the then vacant crown.

Utsuki well utilized straight rights to the head and left hooks to the body and was ahead on points at the end of the fourth round as all three judges scored the fight 39-37 in favor of Utsuki.

All the boxers taking part in the July 20 event ‘’Prime Video Presents Live Boxing 9’’ cleared official weigh-ins at a Tokyo hotel on July 19, except 12th-ranked World Boxing Organization super flyweight Jonathan Rodriguez of Mexico who abandoned his challenge to champion Kosei Tanaka of Soul Box Hatanaka Boxing Gym as he could not make the weight limit.

Tanaka (L) and Rodriguez after weigh-in

The 28-year-old Rodriguez tipped the scales at 55.0 kg (121 lbs), 2.9 kilograms above the super flyweight limit. Tanaka, 29, weighed in at the class limit of 52.1 kg.

Though Rodriguez was given a two-hour grace time to reduce his weight, he gave up doing that, which deprived Tanaka of the opportunity to defend his title he captured in February.

Rodriguez’s promoter Paco Damian of the United States said Rodriguez was seized with spasms of muscles throughout the body during his training on July 17.

While he took water and recovered to some extent in the following day, his weight increased. Though he did practice on July 18, he did not sweat and engaged in exercise in the morning of the weigh-in (July 19), he could not make it.

After failing to make the weight in the official weigh-in in the afternoon, Rodriguez began to run, which caused him cramp again, according to Damian. After that, the Tanaka side decided to give up his fight.

Damian said he ran with Rodriguez and took a sauna bath with him, adding he has never experienced things like that. Since he badly wanted to have him fight with Tanaka, he did not have him seek medical care. Rodriguez is resting at his hotel right now, Damian added.

In this connection, Tanaka’s manager Kiyoshi Hatanaka said, ‘’I don’t want to have him (Tanaka) fight with the boxer heavier than him by two weight classes. Also, I don’t want to set a bad precedent, ‘’ which led him to accept Rodirguez’s abandonment.
