Japan’s 1st heavyweight tournament among 4 rounders planned in May 2025

Mar 15, 2024 9:15 am

Ohashi Boxing Gym and DANGAN Promotion jointly said on March 14 at the gym in Yokohama they will host in May 2025 ‘’the Asia Heavyweight Challenge Cup,’’ in which a total of 16 heavyweight four-round boxers from Asia will compete in the tournament.

The winner of the tournament will get 10 million yen (about 67,693 U.S. dollars) while a knockout prize will be 50,000-300,000 yen depending on the round in which a KO has occurred as far as the preliminary round is concerned, they said. The KO prize will be paid in addition to purses.

The KO winner in the semifinals will each receive 200,000 to 500,000 yen, and a KO winner in the final will get 400,000-1 million yen.

DANGAN’s promoter Yukio Sebata said, ‘’Anybody who is 34 years old and under can take a test to become a professional boxer. We will also welcome those who have competed in sports other than boxing.’’

Ohashi gym head Hideyuki Ohashi said, ‘’I think the heavyweight division (90.72 kg and over or 200 lbs and over) will become an important division for the boxing world in the future. We want to put teeth into that division.’’
