Ex-world champ Tomoki Kameda sets up TMK GYM in Osaka, aims to face ‘Monster’ Inoue

Dec 28, 2022 11:12 am

Former two-division world champion Tomoki Kameda held a press conference on Dec. 27 following the official establishment of TMK GYM in Osaka’s Nishinari Ward that he wants to face the undisputed world bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym at super bantamweight.

The gym is officially headed by former Kyoei Boxing Gym President Keiichiro Kanehira and was built in the ward where the 31-year-old Tomoki grew up together with his eldest brother Koki and his second-eldest brother Daiki. The so-called ‘’Kameda three brothers’’ all became world champions.

‘’I am determined to return to a world champion from this new gym next year,’’ Tomoki pledged. He formerly belonged to TRYBOX Heisei Nishiyama Gym in Hyogo Prefecture after leaving 3150 (Saiko) Fight Club in the Nishinari Ward run by Koki at the end of March this year.

Tomoki watched Inoue’s world title unification fight on Dec. 13 with Britain’s Paul Butler from the ringside seat at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena, in which Inoue knocked out Butler in the 11th round. After the fight, Inoue said he will move up to super bantamweight.

Tomoki, popularly known as ‘’El Mexicanito’’ for he fought mostly in Mexico earlier in his career, is a former World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion and a former World Boxing Council interim super bantamweight champion. Commended Inoue’s strength as he said, ‘’No bantamweight boxers can cope with him.’’

Tomoki, however, added, ‘’In boxing, the difference of a weight division means a lot in terms of power. I don’t know whether he (Inoue) can show the kind of power he used to at super bantamweight as well. If the fight with Inoue realizes, I am confident of beating him.’’
