Former five-division world champion Nonito Donaire (Philippines, 43) held a media workout on the 9th at the Yokohama Hikari Gym ahead of his WBA bantamweight title eliminator against Riku Masuda (Teiken) on the 15th.

Donaire’s media session consisted of one round each of shadowboxing, mitt work, and heavy bag work, yet every punch delivered with a grunt carried immense power—the same devastating force that troubled previous Japanese opponents, including Naoya Inoue and Seiya Tsutsumi. At one point, clearly in high spirits, he repeatedly mimicked a samurai’s sword-draw, visibly enjoying the moment.
According to his wife and manager, Rachel, Donaire resumed training immediately upon returning to his Las Vegas home following his December 17 bout against Tsutsumi. She reported that his conditioning is currently “better than it was for his last fight.” Donaire echoed this sentiment, stating, “My body is listening to me,” to emphasize his optimal form.
Donaire also revealed that he had eaten yakiniku the previous day. While an unconventional choice for a boxer so close to a bout, he noted that he frequently consumes his preferred meats, such as steak, explaining, “I have hunter DNA.”
When asked about his opponent, Riku Masuda, Donaire replied, “It is not that I do not respect Masuda, but I am currently focused on what I need to do, so I am not thinking much about him.”
Regarding the outcome, Donaire stated, “I can visualize my hand being raised at the end. I am confident I will show the best version of myself.” His trainer, Florance, added, “He is returning to the Nonito of old. The champion is humble and doesn’t say much, but he will dominate Masuda. Whether by knockout or otherwise, he will win decisively.”
Donaire noted that he previously placed too much emphasis on his own reputation and external expectations, but he has since moved past that to “enjoy every moment.” His trainer remarked that, above all, “it is good that he is happy.” Donaire concluded by promising, “I have confidence in who I am right now. I will deliver a performance unlike any I have shown before.”
