The press conference for the WBA & WBO world light-flyweight title bout, scheduled for the day after tomorrow (April 3rd), was held at Korakuen Hall on the 1st. Champion Rene Santiago (Puerto Rico) and challenger Masataka Taniguchi (Watanabe) both declared their confidence in victory. The event marks the 12th installment of the “Treasure Boxing Promotion” series, headed by former world champion Masayuki Ito, and serves as the promotion’s first world title fixture.

Santiago and Taniguchi were in agreement regarding their physical states, both declaring themselves to be in “peak condition.” Santiago emphasized his respect not only for Taniguchi but also for his past Japanese opponents, Shokichi Iwata and Ryosuke Takami (both Teiken), asserting his intent to secure a “third consecutive victory” in Japan. Promoter Felix Zabala added, “The key to this fight will be Santiago’s experience.”
Taniguchi, meeting Santiago for the first time today, offered his impressions of the champion: “He is a gentleman and clearly brimming with confidence. It shows he has put in the necessary work.” He added, “This has only made me more excited for the fight the day after tomorrow.” Having completed his final training session yesterday, Taniguchi appeared fully prepared. Glancing toward Santiago, he predicted a change in leadership, stating, “I intend to send him home empty-handed.”

Also in attendance were two former world super-bantamweight champions, Marlon Tapales (Philippines) and Yukinori Oguni (Kadoebi Jewel), who meet in the co-main event. “Oguni is a good boxer. I will do my best to win,” Tapales stated, while Oguni responded, “I have devised various strategies and intend to execute them the day after tomorrow.” A profound tactical battle between the two veterans is anticipated. Former world champion and Kadoebi Jewel Gym Chairman Yusuke Kobori described Oguni’s situation as being “on the edge,” while adding with conviction, “I want him to win and demonstrate the Kadoebi spirit.”
