Boxer in Tokyo gym found suffering from COVID-19

One young boxer belonging to a Tokyo gym under the wing of the Japan Pro Boxing Association is found to have been infected with COVID-19, the novel coronavirus respiratory disease, the Japan Boxing Commission said on July 6.

According to the JBC, the 20-year-old boxer developed a fever on July 3 and was found have shown a positive reaction through a polymerase chain reaction test on July 5.

He is currently under clinical follow-up at his home as no fever and coughing are seen right now. There is nobody in close contact with him, according to a local health center.

The gym has been closed and was disinfected under the guidance of the center. His trainer turned out negative via a PCR test.
In the Japanese boxing world, two boxers in the central Japanese prefecture of Aichi were found to have been infected with COVID-19 in April this year.

While domestic boxing matches have been suspended since March, the JBC and JPBA are planning to resume boxing bouts from July 12 in Kariya in the prefecture.
