World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire of the Philippines sent a video message on March 30 that he would do everything he can to beat World Boxing Association ‘’super’’ and International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue in their title unification fight on June 7 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama Prefecture.

The 39-year-old Donaire said in an interview-style question and answer session during the day’s announcement in Tokyo of the date for the title unification fight with Inoue that he now has a large appetite for victory thanks to Inoue.

The two fought in November 2019 in the final of the World Boxing Super Series at the same place, in which Inoue emerged victorious with a unanimous decision after dropping Donaire in the 11th round. The fight was considered one of the best bouts (or the best) in the world in that year.

As a world champion who has so far held world titles in five different weight divisions, Donaire said since both Inoue, 28, and Donaire have become stronger since then, the coming fight would be a tremendous one. He added he has always wanted to fight Inoue again.

The fight with Inoue reinvigorated him to a great extent, Donaire said. At the same time, he realized bantamweight is his best fighting weight. He said he has regained his erstwhile speed and power.

Soft-spoken Donaire added he would set some kind of a trap to overpower ‘’the Monster.’’ Donaire also commented if he beats Inoue, he can capture three of the four bantamweight titles of the major sanctioning bodies in the world.

Unlike Inoue, who hinted at moving up in weight after the fight in the March 30 press conference, Donaire’s target is to sweep all the bantamweight titles. Donaire’s compatriot John Riel Casimero will put his World Boxing Organization bantamweight title on the line against Britain’s Paul Butler on Apr. 22 in Liverpool.

Inoue of Yokohama-based Ohashi Boxing Gym has a record of 22 straight wins, including 19 knockouts, while Donaire has a 42-6 win-loss tally with 28 KOs.
