Ex-2-division world champ Kyoguchi to have flyweight nontitle fight on Sept. 22

Aug 18, 2023 8:13 am

Former International Boxing Federation minimumweight and World Boxing Association light flyweight champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of Watanabe Boxing Gym said on Aug. 17 at the gym he will have a 10-round flyweight nontitle bout on Sept. 22 in Tokyo.

The 29-year-old Kyoguchi, who will face top-ranked Philippine flyweight Jerven Mama at Korakuen Hall, told reporters, ‘’Though I had to settle for a decision victory in my preceding match (with Mama’s compatriot Roland Jay Biendima in a 10-round flyweight fight last May) because it was my first fight at flyweight.’’

The fight with Biendima was Kyoguchi’s first fight since losing by seventh-round technical knockout to World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym in an exciting title unification fight last November.

According to Kyoguchi, he had his right hand injured in his fight with Biendima during the fight. ‘’But the main theme of the upcoming fight is to knock out my opponent. Mama is a skilled and belligerent boxer who comes forward.’’

‘’I hope to deliver body blow to him effectively,’’ Kyoguchi revealed his tactics, adding, ‘’ I want to knock him out around the middle of the fight.’’

Kyoguchi, who is said to be gunning for a world flyweight title fight next year, is currently ranked fourth in the division by the WBA and eighth by the WBC. He has a record of 17 wins, including 11 KOs, against a loss. For his part, the 26-year-old Mama has a 13-3-1 win-loss-draw tally with seven KOs.
