Hiruta retains WBO female super flyweight title by stopping tenacious Park

Jan 13, 2024 10:14 am

World Boxing Organization female super flyweight champion Mizuki Hiruta of Misako Boxing Gym stopped fifth-ranked Park Ji Hyun of South Korea to retain the title in a scheduled 10-round title fight on Jan. 12 in Tokyo.

It was the 27-year-old Hiruta’s second successful defense of the title she captured in December 2022.

The technical knockout of the scheduled 10-rounder at Korakuen Hall came 1 minute and 45 seconds into the round when the left-handed Hiruta unleashed a barrage of right and left combinations by putting Park against the ropes, prompting the referee to call off the fight.

While Hiruta, a former top amateur boxer, controlled the fight from the first round based on her favorite straight lefts, Park hung tough and refused to give in up until the stoppage.

After the fight, Hiruta said, ‘’I knew my opponent was tough and was, therefore, engaged myself in mental imagery training, which paid off in the end.’’

The undefeated Hiruta extended her unbeaten log to six, including two KOs, while the 38-year-old Park fell to a 26-4 win-loss tally with eight KOs.
