The World Boxing Organization’s top-ranked Asia-Pacific featherweight Kenji Fujita of Teiken Boxing Gym pounded out a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision over second-ranked Joseph Ambo of the Philippines to win the vacant featherweight title on Jan. 20 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall.
Two of the three judges scored the fight 120-107 and the remaining one saw it 118-109, all in favor of the 30-year-old Fujita, who had a total of 10 major amateur titles with a record of 153 wins against 21 losses.
The left-handed Fujita got off to a good start by landing right and left punches to the head and body. He delivered a low blow to his 27-year-old opponent in the fourth round, and Ambo, who was thrashing around on the ring, was given a five-minute rest.
After the fight was resumed, Fujita visibly decreased body blows, and Ambo began to exchange punches at close quarters.
In the 12th and final round, Fujita landed a right punch to the body with Ambo turning his back on Fujita. While the referee issued a standing eight count to Ambo, the Filipino managed to survive the round.
With the win, Fujita extended his unbeaten streak to six, three by knockout, while Ambo fell to a 13-4-1vwin-loss-draw record with eight KOs.
