Suzuki stops Aldea in 1st round, wins vacant OPBF lightweight crown

Jan 21, 2024 10:21 am

The Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation’s third-ranked lightweight Masahiro Suzuki of Kadoebi Boxing Gym needed less than 90 seconds to stop fourth-ranked Roldan Aldea of the Philippines to win the vacant lightweight title on Jan. 20 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall.

Suzuki (R) wins by 1st-round TKO in rematch with Aldea

It was their direct rematch as they fought to a majority draw last October in the Philippines.

The technical knockout of the scheduled 12-round title fight came 1 minute and 22 seconds into the opening round when the 28-year-old Suzuki landed a hard right hook to the head, sending his left-handed opponent crashing down.

While the 29-year-old Aldea attempted to struggle to his feet, the referee called off the fight considering Aldea’s severe damage.

With the win, Suzuki, a former Japanese super lightweight champion, improved his record to 10 wins, including seven KOs, against a loss and a draw. For his part, Aldea fell to an 18-10-2 win-loss-draw result with 10 KOs.
