Former two-division world champion Junto Nakatani of M.T Boxing Gym, unleashing a barrage of right and left combinations, stopped World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Alexandro Santiago of Mexico in the sixth round to win the title on Feb. 24 in Tokyo.
The technical knockout of the scheduled 12-rounder came 1 minute and 12 seconds into the round when the left-handed Nakatani dropped Santiago with a devastating one-two punch to his opponent.
While the 28-year-old Santiago wobbled to his feet to beat the referee’s count, the much taller Nakatani swarmed all over him by landing a straight left and a right hook to the head near a neutral corner and decked him soon after, which prompted the referee to call off the fight.
The fight was held as the chief supporting card of the event dubbed ‘’Prime Video Presents Live Boxing 7’’ at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena
After the fight, Nakatani, 26, said, ‘’I trained myself very hard both in Los Angeles and in Japan for this fight. I want to thank Mr. Santiago for having accepted the fight. Since there have been many excellent WBC bantamweight champions in Japan, I feel greatly honored and will work even harder. I want to continue to have ardent fights so that I can live up to the expectations of my fans.’’
With the victory, the undefeated Nakatani extended his unbeaten log to 27, 20 by KO. For his part, Santiago, who failed in his first defense of the title he captured last July by decisioning Nonito Donaire of the Philippines, fell to a 28-4-5 win-loss-draw record with 14 KOs.
