‘Monster’ Inoue likely to announce his next fight in July, resumes sparring

Jun 29, 2024 10:48 am

Undisputed world super bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’the Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym told reporters in Tokyo on June 28 he thinks he can announce probably next month his opponent in his next fight expected in this autumn.

Naoya (L) and Takuma Inoue

The 31-year-old Inoue, who stopped the World Boxing Council’s top-ranked super bantamweight Luis ‘’Pantera’’ Nery of Mexico in the sixth round to retain his undisputed titles at Tokyo Dome on May 6, said, ‘’I resumed sparring yesterday and it was a good sparring considering the fact it was the first time.’’

Inoue and his younger brother and stablemate World Boxing Association bantamweight champion Takuma Inoue attended the special program of the satellite television company WOWOW Inc., which will be aired on July 15.

Takuma, who pounded out a 12-round unanimous decision over top-ranked Sho Ishida of Ioka Boxing Gym in his last title defense as one of the supporting cards for the Inoue-Nery fight, said he plans to resume sparring from next week. ‘’I intend to have the next fight within this year,’’ added Takuma, who has already fought twice so far this year.

Asked about the possible title unification fight with WBC bantamweight champion Junto Nakatani of M.T Boxing Gym, Takuma said, ‘’Since we both want to have the title unification bout, I think I will fight with him if we continue winning. I am looking forward to it.’’

Nakatani will defend his title for the first time against top-ranked Vincent Astrolabio of the Philippines on July 20 at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena.
