Champion Seigo ‘’Yuri’’ Akui of Kurashiki Moriyasu Gym pounded out a 10-round unanimous decision over top-ranked Seiya Fujikita of Misako Boxing Gym to retain his Japanese flyweight title in Okayama Prefecture on Oct. 18.
It was the 25-year-old Akui’s first successful defense of the title he captured in October last year. Although the bout was initially set in March this year, it was postponed amid the novel coronavirus confusion.
While there were no knockdowns, Akui, who has been fighting out of the western Japanese prefecture-based gym since 2013, overpowered his 32-year-old challenger at short range throughout the fight held at the Amakusa Park Gymnasium in Asakuchi in the prefecture.
With the victory, Akui improved his record to 15 wins, including 10 knockouts, against two losses and a draw. Fujikita, who would have become Misako gym’s seventh Japanese champion if he had won the title, fell to 13 wins, four by KO, against five losses. Currently, the Tokyo-based Misako Gym has nine champions overall, the most among Japanese boxing gyms.
