2-time gold medalist Ramirez in Japan to defend WBO featherweight title against Shimizu on July 25

Jul 13, 2023 13:57 pm

World Boxing Organization featherweight champion Robeisy Ramirez of Cuba arrived in Japan on July 12 to defend his title against 12th-ranked challenger Satoshi Shimizu of Ohashi Boxing Gym on July 25 in Tokyo.

Upon arrival at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, the 29-year-old Ramirez said, ‘’I have always wanted to come to Japan. I am very happy that I was welcomed this extravagantly. I am accustomed to travelling to various countries. So, I don’t mind long hours and a long-distance travelling.’’

Ramirez captured the flyweight gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and went on to win the bantamweight gold medal at the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

It will be Ramirez’s first defense of the title he captured in April this year by decisioning

Isaac Dogboe of Britain for the vacant crown.

Ramirez has a record of 12 wins, including seven KOs, against a loss. For his part, the 37-year-old Shimizu, the London Olympics bantamweight bronze medalist, has an 11-1 win-loss tally with 10 knockouts.

The scheduled 12-rounder will be held at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena as the chief supporting card for the World Boxing Council and WBO super bantamweight title match between champion Stephen Fulton of the United States and Shimizu’s stablemate and top-ranked challenger Naoya ‘’the Monster’’ Inoue.
