A total of eight boxers and trainers at a Tokyo boxing gym belonging to the Japan Pro Boxing Associations were found to be infected with COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, the Japan Boxing Commission said on Sept. 1.
Five boxers and three trainers showed positive results after taking polymerase chain reaction tests between Aug. 27 and 31, according to the JBC.
While the five boxers have not shown any symptoms, four of them are being furloughed and the remaining one is staying at a hotel. Of the three trainers, the one in his 70s and the one in his 30s were hospitalized. The third trainer is being furloughed.
The gym was closed and is waiting for instructions of a local healthcare center.
A cluster outbreak was discovered among people at a boxing gym in Osaka, western Japan, late in July.
