Both World Boxing Association super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka of Shisei Boxing Gym and International Boxing Federation super flyweight kingpin Fernando Martinez of Argentina cleared official weigh-ins at a Tokyo hotel on July 6 for their title unification bout the following day.
The scheduled 12-rounder will be held at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena under the banner of LIFETIME BOXING FIGHTS 22.
While the 32-year-old Martinez weighed in at the class limit of 52.1 kg (115 lbs), Ioka, 35, tipped the scales at 52.0 kg (114.64 lbs), setting the stage for their clash.
After a customary face off before a group of reporters, Ioka said, ‘’Now that I have cleared the weigh-in, I will concentrate on my fight as I am determined to unify the titles by showing an overwhelming attack. I am in my best condition in my career.’’
For his part, Martinez, gingered up by his supporters, told the reporters, ‘’I went through hard training. It will be a historic ‘war’ between the two countries tomorrow.’’
Former WBA super lightweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’’ Romero of the United States, who also sits at the feet of Ioka’s trainer Isamel Salas of Cuba, was also at the conference.
It will be Ioka’s second defense of the title he won last June by decisioning Joshua Franco of the United States by relinquishing his World Boxing Organization super flyweight title. The undefeated Martinez is making his third defense of the crown he captured by decisioning Jerwin Ancajas of the Philippines in February 2022.
Ioka, one of Japan’s three four weight-division world champions in history, has a record of 31 wins, including 16 KOs, against two losses and a draw. Martinez has 16 straight wins, nine by KO.
