Shiba, Iwata to vie for vacant Japan light flyweight crown on Sept. 11

Jul 24, 2021 9:48 am

Top-ranked Japanese light flyweight Rikito Shiba of Shinsei Boxing Gym and Shokichi Iwata of Teiken Boxing Gym will vie for the title left vacant by Masamichi Yabuki of Midori Boxing Gym on Sept. 11 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, it was learned on July 23.

This is because Yabuki, 29, will challenge World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of BMB Boxing Gym for the latter’s title on Sept. 10 at Kyoto City Gymnasium in Kyoto, western Japan.

The 25-year-old Shiba, a former amateur boxer at Kindai University, has a record of five wins, including three wins, against a loss, while the 25-yerar-old Iwata, a graduate of Waseda University, is undefeated in his six bouts, four by KO.

While second-ranked Daiki Tomita of Mitsuki Boxing Gym cannot compete for the time being due to his suffering injuries, Iwata will replace him, according to informed sources.
