Japan’s Ryomei Tanaka came from behind to decision Yuberjen Martinez of Colombia 4-1 in a men’s flyweight quarterfinal match, ensuring at least a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Aug 3. In boxing, there are no bronze-medal deciding matches held for health reasons.

The four of the five judges saw the bout 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28 for Tanaka, who suffered a slight cut above his right eyelid in the first round. But the remaining one judge had it 29-28 for Martinez.

Boxing at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, the left-handed Tanaka, 27, was put on the defensive early in the first round as the 29-year-old Colombian fighter landed straight rights to the head several times. Tanaka, however, occasionally rallied with his favorite straight lefts to the head and left hooks to the body. Four of the five judges scored the round for Martinez.

In the second round, Tanaka moved forward, landing right hooks to the head and left hooks to the body while Martinez countered with right hooks and straight rights to the head. Three of the five judges saw the round for Tanaka.

In the third and final round, Tanaka continued to land straight lefts to the head and left hooks to the body while Martinez connected with straight rights to the head a few times. All of the five judges scored the round for Tanaka for his come-from-behind victory.
