Former female amateur star Hiruta decisions OPBF champ Nuki in super flyweight 8-rounder

Apr 13, 2022 9:01 am

Mizuki Hiruta of Misako Boxing Gym, coming off two knockdowns late in the fight, managed to earn a unanimous decision over Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super flyweight champion Terumi Nuki of Hiroki Ioka Boxing Gym in a female super flyweight eight-round match at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on Apr. 12.

It was Hiruta’s second straight victory after turning professional last October. She failed to take part in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as she dropped a close decision to eventual gold medalist Sena Irie of Nippon Sport Science University in the final featherweight qualifying match in 2020.

Fighting against Nuki, Southpaw Hiruta showed the difference of class from the opening bell, landing straight lefts and right hooks while moving side to side.

While the 25-year-old Hiruta piled up points, Nuki, 33, showed her mettle in the penultimate round when she decked Hiruta early in the round with a right hook and added another knockdown also with a right.

After surviving the round, Hiruta utilized her speedy footwork in the eighth and final round to end the fight on top.

‘’I was surprised because I had never suffered that kind of knockdowns in my amateur days. But somehow, I was able to get by. I will continue to hang in as a professional, ‘’ Hiruta said afterwards with tears.

Earlier, Taishin Isotani of Wajima Koichi Sports Gym, a grandson of former legendary world super welterweight champion Koichi Wajima, made his second straight first-round KO following his debut last October as he flattened Kodai Hosoya of Hanagata Boxing Gym only 54 seconds into the round in a welterweight four-rounder.
