Second-ranked Koki Tyson of Ichiriki Boxing Gym pounded out a 10-round unanimous decision over top-ranked Yuki Nonaka of Atsumi Boxing Gym and became Japan’s first super middleweight champion in history on June 10 in Osaka.
While there were no knockdowns during the fight at EDION Arena Osaka’s annex, the left-handed Tyson landed more effective blows, highlighted by right jabs and counter lefts to the head, throughout the fight. Both tipped the scales at the class limit of 76.2 kg (168 lbs.).
After the fight, the 30-year-old Tyson said curtly, ‘’I am glad that I was able to become the champion at my home city (of Osaka). I will try even harder.’’
With the defeat, Nonaka, also left-handed, failed to become Japan’s oldest boxer in history to win a title as he is now 45 years and six months. He did not specify whether he will still continue to fight or not.
The fight was held as the chief supporting card for the main event of the ‘’3150FIGHT SURVIVAL vol.5,’’ in which Japanese heavyweight champion Mitsuro Brandon Tajima of KWORLD3 Boxing Gym decisioned Luis Jose Marin Garcia of Venezuela in an eight-round nontitle fight.
With the win, Tyson improved his record to 16 wins, including 13 knockouts, against five losses and three draws, while Nonaka sagged to a 35-12-3 win-loss-draw tally with 10 KOs.
