Kawamitsu retains Japan light flyweight title with TKO over Ando

May 05, 2024 10:08 am

Toshiki Kawamitsu of Misako Boxing Gym, unleashing a barrage of left-and-right combinations, stopped top-ranked challenger Kosuke Ando of KG Yamato Boxing Gym in the sixth round to retain his Japanese light flyweight title in Tokyo on May 4.

Kawamitsu (R) overwhelms Ando with his power

It was the 28-year-old Kawamitsu’s first successful defense of the title he won from Toshimasa Ouchi of Himeji-Kinoshita Boxing Gym last December.

The technical knockout of the scheduled 10-rounder at Korakuen Hall came 2 minutes and 29 seconds into the round when Kawamitsu severely staggered Ando with a sizzling left hook to the head, prompting the referee to call off the fight immediately.

While both exchanged fierce blows from the first round, it was Kawamitsu who got the better of Ando by landing overhand rights and left hooks to the head and body.

With the win, Kawamitsu improved his record to 10 wins, including six knockouts, and a loss. The 31-year-old Ando, who failed to avenge his TKO loss to Kawamitsu in January 2021, fell to a 13-5 win-loss tally with six KOs.
