Undefeated Keisuke Matsumoto of Ohashi Boxing Gym pounded out a shutout decision over eighth-ranked challenger Yushi Fujita of Ioka Boxing Gym to retain his Japanese featherweight title on June 25 in Tokyo.
While there were no knockdowns in the 10-round fight at Korakuen Hall, it was Matsumoto who landed more accurate punches throughout the bout. All three judges scored the fight 100-90, respectively for Matsumoto.
It was the 24-year-old Matsumoto’s third successful defense of the title he captured in April last year.
While the left-handed Fujita, 34, frequently switched to an orthodox stance in an attempt to befuddle Matsumoto, Matsumoto was not fazed.
Late in the fight, Matsumoto mostly worked Fujita’s body while sticking out sharp jabs but failed to land decisive blows at a crucial juncture.
After the fight, Matsumoto said, ‘’Considering today’s fight, I have to go back to square one. I will resume training soon so that I can become much stronger.’’
With the win, Matsumoto improved his unbeaten streak to 11, seven by knockout, whereas Fujita, who fought his first Japanese title fight in his 14-year professional career, impaired to a 12-10-4 win-loss-draw tally with three KOs.
