Nagata retains Japan S. lightweight title by drawing with Kondo

Dec 11, 2020 10:18 am

Champion Daishi Nagata of Misako Boxing Gym, bleeding badly from the cut above his left eye, drew with second-ranked Akihiro Kondo of Ichiriki Boxing Gym in the seventh round and managed to retain his Japanese super lightweight title at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on Dec. 10.

It was Nagata’s first successful defense of the title he captured last July by stopping Koki Inoue, a cousin of Naoya ‘’Monster’’ Inoue.

The scheduled 10-rounder ended 1 minute and 14 seconds into the round as the referee stopped the fight when Nagata’s cut worsened. Nagata suffered the cut due to an accidental butt in the sixth round.
The decision went to the judges’ scorecards. One of the three judges scored the fight 67-66 in favor of Nagata. But the remaining two judges saw it 67-67, respectively.

Until the stoppage, southpaw Nagata slightly led the fight by throwing straight lefts and right hooks against Kondo, known for his toughness.

With the draw, the 30-year-old Nagata has a record of 15 wins, including six knockouts, against two defeats and two draws. For his part, the 35-year-old Kondo, a former Japanese lightweight champion, now has a 32-9-2 win-loss-draw record with 18 KOs.
