Fighting at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Sarena behind closed doors, southpaw Okazawa controlled the bout throughout against his left-handed rival, to whom Okazawa lost in an Asian preliminary round last year.

In the female featherweight first-round competition, Japan’s Sena Irie also pounded out a 5-0 decision over Yamileth Solorzano of El Salvador to advance to the next round. It was a Japanese female boxer’s first victory in the Olympic Games.
