Final decision on ex-female world champ Shindo’s wish to return to ring as male boxer likely in March

Feb 07, 2023 15:43 pm

The head of Green Tsuda Boxing Gym held a press conference on Feb. 6 that the final decision on whether or not the gym’s former World Boxing Council female flyweight champion Go Shindo’s wish to return to the ring as a male boxer will probably be made in March.

Speaking before a group of reporters at the Osaka-based gym, Masaya Motoishi said if things go smoothly, the 35-year-old Shindo will be able to take a license test in April after Japan Boxing Commission’s final conference at its board meeting in March following its advisory council meeting in the middle of this month to discuss his possible ‘’physical problems.’’

Shindo became a male by going through sex reassignment surgery in 2017 in Thailand and changed his family registration after the surgery. Shindo is married and has three children as he always says, ‘’I want to show the figure I fight in the ring to my children.’’

Motoishi said, ‘’The matter of Shindo’s return to the ring is now in the final stage. From what I have heard, discussions have been being held in a positive manner, which would reach a positive result for Shindo. Since Shindo will turn 36 in July, I hope Shindo can climb through the ropes as early as possible considering the retirement age for a boxer (37 years old).’’

In this connection, Japan Pro Boxing Association is offering its full support for Shindo and has come to discuss the matter with JBC.

Since it is an unprecedented matter, if Shindo’s wish is realized, it will be a monumental step. Motoishi said, ‘’It will also have a positive effect on other sports as well.’’

Shindo had 16 wins, including 11 KOs, against four losses as a female boxer
