Newly crowned World Boxing Association super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka of Shisei Boxing Gym said on June 25 in Tokyo he wants to have a title unification fight with World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico.
Speaking before a group of reports at the gym, the 34-year-old Ioka, who wrested the WBA title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Joshua Franco of the United States in their direct rematch on the preceding day in Tokyo. Franco fought despite the fact that he was stripped of the title due to his failure to meet the division’s weight limit in his official weigh-in on June 23.
Ioka said, ‘’I aim at the title unification fight with Juan Estrada,’’ adding he is ready to fight in the U.S. if the fight in Japan is difficult. Though Estrada was supposed to come to visit Japan to see the Ioka-Franco fight in person, he cancelled his visit at the last minute.
In this connection, the Ioka side is of the view it will get in touch with Estrada, 33, and his handlers within the next several days so that the intended fight would be realized.
Reflecting on his fight with Franco, Ioka said, ‘’I climbed through the ropes so that I would not regret about the fight later. In this respect, I am satisfied with my performance.’’
Ioka added he will take about a month off just like he used to.
Ioka also mentioned Japan Boxing Commission’s announcement on June 21 of Ioka’s alleged use of a hemp substance when Ioka and Franco first fought on Dec. 31 last year, which ended in a draw, as Ioka said he has misgivings about JBC’s behavior at that point in time.
In this connection, JBC is planning to establish an ethical committee in July to discuss the matter in detail.
