Ex-WBO world female atomweight champ Nanae Suzuki hangs up her gloves

Sep 05, 2023 9:34 am

Former World Boxing Organization’s world female atomweight champion Nanae Suzuki of Shu Boxing Gym submitted a retirement notice to Japan Boxing Commission as of Sept. 1, JBC said on Sept. 4.

After making a professional debut at the age of 23 in 2016, Suzuki won the vacant Japanese atomweight title in 2018 by decisioning Sana Hazuki of Shirokane Gym and then won the WBO’s world atomweight title in February 2022 by decisioning Mika Iwakawa of Himeji-Kinoshita Boxing Gym.

After losing the title to Yuko Kuroki of Shinsei Boxing Gym in her first defense of the title in September last year, she also lost to Kuroki in their direct rematch in this past March, which proved to be her last fight. The 31-year-old Suzuki’s lifetime record was 11 wins, including one knockout, against six losses and a draw.
