Japan’s Namiki decisions Brazilian in women’s flyweight in 2nd-round bout at Olympics

Jul 30, 2021 9:41 am

Light-footed Tsukimi Namiki of Japan hammered out a 5-0 unanimous decision over Graziele Sousa of Brazil in the second-round bout of the women’s flyweight division at the Tokyo Olympics on July 29 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena.

While both southpaws circled to the right by sticking out right jabs, the 22-year-old Namiki took the first round by landing a pair of left hooks late in the round.

The 30-year-old Brazilian began to increase her pace by attempting to smother her agile opponent in the second round. But neither boxer was able to land clear punches.

In the third and final round, Namiki forced Graziele against the ropes and landed one-two combinations late in the round to ensure her victory.

Namiki will next box with Ingrit Valencia of Colombia, the bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, on Aug. 1 in the quarterfinals.
