‘Monster’ Inoue to face Donaire again on June 7 in title unification fight, Amazon says

Mar 30, 2022 18:07 pm

World Boxing Association ‘’super’’ and International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym will face World Boxing Council bantamweight kingpin Nonito Donaire of the Philippines in the title unification fight on June 7 in Saitama Prefecture, Amazon Prime Video said at a press conference on March 30 in Tokyo.

The scheduled 12-rounder will take place at Saitama Super Arena, northwest of Tokyo, according to the Seattle, Washington-based subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming company.

The 28-year-old Inoue, who was present at the press conference, said, ‘’While I beat Donaire once, I am determined to win the fight in a manner better than before.’’

The two fought in November 2019 in the final of the World Boxing Super Series in the same arena, in which Inoue won with a unanimous decision as he dropped Donaire in the 11th round with a left hook to the body for a mandatory eight count.

The 39-year-old Donaire, who had captured world titles in five different weight divisions, came back strongly in 2021 and captured the WBC bantamweight crown and successfully defended the title later in that year.

According to Inoue, ‘’Rather than winning the title of the third sanctioning body per se, I am more interested in fighting with Donaire himself. The only thing I am interested in right now is to deck Donaire completely.’’

In a manner similar to the Apr. 9 title unification fight between WBA ‘’super’’ middleweight champion Ryota Murata of Teiken Boxing Gym and IBF ruler Gennadiy Gennadyevich Golovkin of Kazakhstan at the same arena, the Inoue-Donaire confrontation will be Amazon’s second transmission under the title of ‘’Prime Video presents Live Boxing.’’

Inoue has a record of 22 straight wins, including 19 knockouts, while Donaire has a 42-6 win-loss tally with 28 KOs.
