Matsuda decisions Nagai wins female OPBF atomweight title again

Sep 01, 2022 23:25 pm

Second-ranked International Boxing Federation atomweight Eri Matsuda of TEAM10COUNT pounded out an eight-round unanimous decision over top-ranked IBF atomweight Kaori Nagai of Shinsei Boxing Gym and won the vacant female Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation atomweight title on Sept. 1 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall.

There were no knockdowns throughout the fight as neither was able to land clear blows in a fight marred with clinches especially in the latter rounds.

With the win, Matsuda, a former OPBF champion of the division, improved her record to fives wins, including one KO, against a loss and a draw, while Nagai fell to a 6-5-3 win-loss-draw tally with two KOs.
Meanwhile, top-ranked Mizuki Hiruta of Misako Boxing Gym hammered out a lopsided six-round decision over third-ranked Hinami Yanai of Shinsei Boxing Gym and captured the vacant Japanese flyweight title.

The left-handed Hiruta, who missed the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as he dropped a close decision in the Japanese preliminaries to eventual gold medalist Sena Irie, displayed a speedy boxing from the opening round.

While Yanai, who also has an ample amateur record, attempted counter punches, Hiruta, 26, shut her out for her third straight win since turning pro last October. Yanai, who could not make the flyweight weight limit in her weigh-in the previous day, fell to a 2-1 win-loss record with one KO.
These fights served as the supporting cards for the day’s two female atomweight championship bouts.
