WBO light flyweight champ Gonzalez looks beyond Nov. 1 title defense against Iwata

Oct 25, 2022 0:21 am

World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Jonathan Gonzalez of Puerto Rico said after his public training at Tokyo’s Teiken Boxing Gym on Oct. 24 he wants to have a title unification fight after his title defense against the WBO’s second-ranked light flyweight Shokichi Iwata of Teiken gym on Nov. 1 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama Prefecture.

After the workout, which did not include sparring, the 31-year-old Gonzalez said through an interpreter, ‘’I am in good condition both physically and mentally because I engaged myself in 12-to-14 weeks of training for the fight (with the 26-year-old Iwata).

‘’True he (Iwata) is a young and good boxer having good right uppercuts and straight rights. But I am superior to him in terms of experience. I will throw many punches in various ways in every round. I am happy if I can achieve a knockout victory. But even if it goes the distance, I am not worried about the decision because Japan is a country which abides by a fair decision.’’

Both his chief trainer and an assistant trainer (his father) appeared a little bit concerned about judges’ decision. They think the left-handed Gonzalez can fend off Iwata’s attack by moving side to side while piling up points with his number of moves in attack.

According to Gonzalez, he has done more than 100 rounds of sparring, including a 14-round sparring session at a time. ‘’I did such a hard training because I want to fight with the winner of the light flyweight title unification match (between World Boxing Council champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym and World Boxing Association ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of Watanabe Boxing Gym to be held as the main event on Nov. 1).

In this connection, Gonzalez said, ‘’If possible, I want to face Hiroto (Kyoguchi). I think Hiroto will win it because he is more powerful than Kenshiro (Teraji).’’

Gonzales, who is making his second defense of the title he captured a year ago, has a record of 26 wins, including 14 KOs, against three losses and one no contest. The undefeated Iwata has nine wins, six by KO.
