Hanada upsets world-ranked Villar in 7th, in ‘3150FIGHTVol.4,’ vows to win world title

Jan 07, 2023 6:13 am

Lightly regarded Ayumu Hanada of Shinken Hanshin Boxing Gym, displaying quick combination blows, upset World Boxing Council’s fourth-ranked light flyweight Azael Villar of Panama as he stopped him in the seventh round on Jan. 6 at EDION Arena Osaka.

The technical knockout of the scheduled eight-round flyweight fight came 46 seconds into the round as the referee stopped the contest when the 20-year-old Hanada sent the 28-year-old into the ropes by landing a series of hard straight rights to the head.

While they exchanged fierce blows from the opening bell, Hanada, who mostly fought in Mexico, floored Villar twice in the fourth round, both with rapid left-right combinations setting the stage for his onslaught in the seventh round.

After the fight, Hanada said, ‘’I fought just like I had originally planned. Since my aim is to win a world title, I cannot remain at this level. I had planned to land straight rights above his left jabs, and it worked out well.’’

With the victory, Hanada improved his record to nine wins, including seven KOs, against a loss and a draw. For his part, Villar fell to a 19-2-3 win-loss-draw tally with 15 KOs.

The fight was held as part of the ‘’3150FIGHTVol.4’’ boxing series promoted by Koki Kameda, the head of Kameda Promotion Co, popularly known as Kameda ‘’founder.’’
