Abe to face ex-world champ Martinez to decide challenger to IBF featherweight champion

Feb 14, 2023 9:19 am

Third-ranked International Boxing Federation featherweight Reiya Abe of KG Yamato Boxing Gym will face second-ranked Kiko Martinez of Spain on Apr. 8 at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena for a scheduled 12-rounder to decide the challenger for the IBF featherweight title currently held by Luis Lopez of Mexico, organizers said on Feb. 13.

The fight is part of ‘’Prime Video Presents Live Boxing No. 4’’ series which envisages staging several big fights on a single day.

Speaking at a press conference at a Tokyo hotel, the 29-year-old Abe said, ‘’Though my fight will not have much of a presence considering boxers fighting on the same day, I will show a high-impact fight.’’

Since the 36-year-old Martinez stopped legendary Hozumi Hasegawa of Shinsei Boxing Gym to successfully defend his IBF super bantamweight title (in 2014), he must be strong. So, I am not taking him lightly. I think he is looking for a place to retire. I will put an end to his long career.’’

Martinez has a record of 44 wins, including 31 knockouts, against 11 losses and two draws. Abe has a 24-3-1 win-loss-draw tally with 10 KOs.
