Nishida decisions Songsaeng, retains WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title for 3rd time

Apr 02, 2023 11:08 am

World Boxing Organization’s Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion Ryosuke Nishida of Muto Boxing Gym scored a knockdown in the third round and went on to earn a shutout decision over Songsaeng Phoyaem of Thailand in the 3150Fight Survival Vo.4 event on Apr. 1 in Osaka.

It was the 26-year-old Nishida’s third successful defense of the title he wrested from Daigo Higa of Shisei Boxing Gym in April 2021.

Fighting at the annex of EDION Arena Osaka, the left-handed Nishida landed right jabs, right hooks, straight lefts and uppercuts to the head and body of the 23-year-old Songsaeng almost at will.

Despite scoring the knockdown in the third round with a right hook, which appeared to be a slip down, Nishida continued his style of careful boxing.

Though Nishida visibly increased his offense later in the fight, Songsaeng, ranked third in the division, took Nishida’s punches well throughout the 12-round fight.

After the fight, Nishida said, ‘’I feel shocked. Mr. Songsaeng was tough. I really wanted to display an interesting fight (a knockout victory). I am determined to learn a kind of boxing which can lend itself to scoring a KO victory. I will then move on to take a crack at a world title.’’

With the victory, Nishida improved his record to seven straight wins, including a KO. Songsaeng fell to an 18-4 win-loss tally with 12 KOs.
