Kameda eyes Shigeoka brothers’ title fights with respective champions on Aug. 11 in Osaka

Apr 18, 2023 13:02 pm

The head of Kameda Promotion Co. said on Apr. 17 in Tokyo he is planning to have a pair of new interim world minimumweight champions Yudai Shigeoka and his younger brother Ginjiro Shigeoka, both of Watanabe Boxing Gym, face the champions in their respective organizations on Aug. 11 in Osaka.

Speaking before a group of reporters at the gym, Koki Kameda, who promoted the ‘‘3150FIGHT Vol.5’’ the preceding day in Tokyo, said, ‘’I know it will not be easy to stage the fights in Japan since it will be decided by competitive bidding. But I badly want to stage their fights in Osaka (in 3150FIGHT Vol.6).’’

Yudai was supposed to challenge World Boxing Council minimumweight champion Panya Pradabsri of Thailand for the latter’s title. But Panya cancelled the fight earlier this month due to the flue.

Former World Boxing Organization minimumweight champion Wilfredo Mendez of Puerto Rico was then selected as Yudai’s opponent.

Yudai knocked out Mendez with a devastating body blow in the seventh round and won the WBC interim world minimumweight title.

For his part, Ginjiro also knocked out the International Boxing Federation’s third-ranked Rene Mark Cuarto of the Philippines in the ninth round and won the IBF interim world minimumweight title earlier in the day’s ‘’3150FIGHT Vol.5.’’

Ginjiro had to face Cuarto instead of IBF minimumweight champion Daniel Valladares of Mexico because Valladares is out of action as he is said to be suffering from his left ear problems after his title defense against Ginjiro on Jan. 6 in Osaka. The fight was declared no contest.
