Franco, Ioka face off in press meeting, 1 week before their rematch in Tokyo

Jun 19, 2023 12:16 pm

World Boxing Association super flyweight kingpin Joshua Franco of the United States and former World Boxing Organization super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka of Shisei Boxing Gym glared at each other at a press conference in Tokyo on June 17 before their clash on June 24 at Ota City General Gymnasium.

The 34-year-old Ioka relinquished his title in February this year after they fought to a majority draw in their title unification fight last Dec. 31 at the same place. This is because Ioka badly wanted a direct rematch with Franco.

‘’I think neither Franco nor I am not satisfied with the result. That’s what I think. I want to arrange a settlement with him, Ioka, currently ranked sixth in the WBA’s super flyweight division, said.  For his part, the 27-year-old Franco, who arrived in Japan on June 16, commented Ioka has a large appetite.

While Ioka added, ‘’I have done all I had to do,’’ Franco said he is bettered conditioned than he was before especially in terms of movements.

Ioka, Japan’s only four-division world champion, has a record of 29 wins, including 15 knockouts, against two losses and a draw, while Franco has an 18-1-3 win-loss-draw tally with eight KOs.

In their first fight, one of the three judges scored the fight 115-113 for Franco, while the remaining two had it 114-114, respectively.
