Ozawa captures WBO world female super flyweight title by edging Yoshida

May 31, 2022 0:44 am

Challenger Tamao Ozawa of Futur Boxing Gym eked out a split decision over Miyo Yoshida of Misako Boxing Gym in a fight marred with clinches and captured the World Boxing Organization world female super flyweight title on May 30 in Tokyo.

The 36-year-old Ozawa won the world title in her third attempt, while Yoshida, 34, failed to retain the title she captured from Tomoko Okuda of Mitsuki Boxing Gym in a direct rematch last June.
After the 10-round fight at Korakuen Hall, two of the three judges had it 97-93 in favor of Ozawa, while the remaining judge saw it 96-94 for Yoshida. There were no knockdowns in the fight.

After a cautious start, Ozawa, whose last fight was back in April 2019, unleashed rapid combinations occasionally against overly cautious Yoshida, who threw few punches from her crouching style by keeping her guard tight. Both fighters oftentimes pushed and shoved each other throughout the bout.
After the fight, Ozawa said, ‘’Since I have a 10-month-old baby, I knew I would have a hard time. But I have continued boxing for 10 years, which finally paid off.’’

With the victory, Ozawa improved her record to 17 wins, including six knockouts, against five losses. For her part, Yoshida, known as a single fighting mother, impaired to a 15-3 win-loss tally.
