Iwata demolishes Filipino Brillo in 6th round, eyes another world title challenge

Aug 05, 2023 20:23 pm

The World Boxing Council’s second-ranked light flyweight Shokichi Iwata of Teiken Boxing Gym, uncorking strong body shots, stopped Jayson Brillo of the Philippines in the sixth round in a scheduled 10-round nontitle bout at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on Aug. 5.

It was the 27-year-old Iwata’s second straight victory after losing to World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Jonathan Gonzalez of Puerto Rico last November in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo.

While Iwata went down on all fours in the third round with the left-handed Brillo’s overhand right to the back of the head, it was judged to be an accidental rabbit punch.

The 22-year-old Brillo, ranked 12th in the division in the Philippines, went all over Iwata by landing right hooks to the head and left hooks to the body, staggering Iwata who managed to survive the round.

Iwata began to show his mettle from the fourth round by working Brillo’s body, gradually sapping hi s strength and dropped his opponent in the sixth round with a left hook to the body. While Brillo struggled to his feet by beating the referee’s count, Iwata wasted no time in sending him again to the canvas with a series of left hooks to the body, causing the referee to call off the fight a minute and 28 seconds into the round.

With the win, Iwata, who is gunning for his second world title challenge, improved his record to 11 wins, including eight KOs, against a loss, while Brillo suffered his first loss as he now has a record of seven wins, six by KO, against a loss and a draw.
