Ex-IBF world super featherweight champ Ogawa decisions Esquierdo in nontitle bout

Sep 03, 2023 8:58 am

Former International Boxing Federation super featherweight champion Kenichi Ogawa of Teiken Boxing Gym pounded out a unanimous decision over Marvin Esquierdo of the Philippines in a 10-round nontitle bout at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on Sept. 2.

It was the 35-year-old Ogawa’s second straight victory since losing his IBF title to Joe Cordina of Britain by knockout in Wales in June last year.

Ogawa got off to an active start by throwing lefts jabs and straight rights while dodging Esquierdo’s punches.

But Ogawa failed to land his Sunday punches due chiefly to his opponent’s defensive boxing, and the fight ended that way. There were no knockdowns. All three judges scored the fight for Ogawa by big margins.

Ogawa, currently ranked sixth in the division by the IBF, said after the fight, ‘’Though I wanted to exchange blows, I should have chased my opponent in a better way.’’

With the victory, Ogawa improved his record to 28 wins, including 19 KOs, against two defeats and a draw with one no contest. The 28-year-old Esquierdo, ranked ninth in the Philippine super featherweight division, fell to a 17-3-1 win-loss-draw tally with 11 KOs and one no contest.
