Former World Boxing Organization world female super flyweight champion Miyo Yoshida of Japan pounded out a 10-round unanimous decision over International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Ebanie Bridges of Australia to wrest the title in San Franciso on Dec. 9 (10 Japan time).
Yoshida, who replaced Bridges’ compatriot Avril Mathie, the IBF’s 11th-ranked contender in the division, some two weeks before the fight due to Mathie’s injury, overwhelmed Bridges throughout the fight held at the city’s Chase Center.
Though there were no knockdowns in the fight, two of the three judges scored the fight 99-91 and the remaining one had it 97-93, all in favor of the 10th-ranked Yoshida, popularly known as ‘’a fighting single parent.’’
Yoshida, who used to belong to Tokyo’s Misako Boxing Gym, went to live in New York late last year with her eight-year-old daughter. Yoshida lost the WBO title to Tamao Ozawa of Futur Boxing Gym in May last year.
While Yoshida won her first bout in New York in this past May, she suffered a decision loss in a fight held only about a month ago also in New York.
With the victory, the 35-year-old Yoshida improved her record to 17 wins against four losses. For her part, Bridges, 37, sagged to a 9-2 win-loss tally with four knockouts.
