Officials of the Japan Boxing Commission and Japan Pro Boxing Association discussed on an online meeting on June 5 the possible introduction of polymerase chain reaction tests for boxers with a view to officially resuming pro boxing matches in July after the long absence due to the severe novel coronavirus infection, known as COVID-19.
The move will follow in the footsteps of the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization and the J-League pro football body, both severely beset by COVID-19 in terms of schedules and others, as they adopt PCR tests for players.
The boxing officials also agreed to seek the advice of the Japan Sports Agency before putting into practice the introduction of PCR tests.
“Just like other sports, we would like to ask the agency whether we can adopt the tests for boxers,” said JBC Secretary General Tsuyoshi Yasukochi.
At the online meeting, questions were also raised about the advisability of boxers going home through trains and other public transportation systems right after official weigh-ins held a day before their bouts. Some suggested that they stay at hotels after the weigh-ins to avoid close contact with other persons.
Already antibody tests are required for boxers concerned and persons involved three weeks before the fights and a pre-fight day.
