Last Year’s Tokyo Olympics women’s featherweight gold medalist Sena Irie of Nippon Sport Science University, popularly abbreviated as Nittaidai, was the only Japanese winner in the Asian U22 Boxing Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, between Jan. 22 and 29, Japan Boxing Federation said on Feb. 2.
Besides Irie, three men and two women placed second while three women earned third place.
Irie, 21, pounded out a 5-0 decision over highly touted Mongolian Namuun Monkhor in the final by landing speedy one-two combinations to her opponent. It was Irie’s first international competition after the Olympics. She was later named the most valuable player in the women’s event.
Women’s boxers competed in 12 weight divisions, whereas male boxers took part in 13 categories. The winner of each division is said to have been given 8,000 dollars. Those who placed second each received 4,000 dollars and a third-place finisher received 2,000 dollars, according to event sources.
After the victory, Irie said, ‘’My opponent in the final was taller than expected. While I am not good at fighting against a tall boxer, I think I was able to box at long range, which was good. I got nervous since this was the first international tournament after the Olympics. But I am feeling a sense of relief now thanks to the victory. One of my biggest aims in the future is to win the gold medal in September’s Asian Games (in China’s Hangzhou).’’
