Men’s flyweight Ryomei Tanaka, an elder brother of pro boxing’s former three-division world champion Kosei Tanaka of SOUL BOX Hatanaka Boxing Gym, pounded out a 5-0 unanimous decision over Yoel Finol of Venezuela in the first-round match at the Tokyo Olympics on July 26.

Boxing at the Ryogoku kokugikan Sumo Arena, both southpaws exchanged fierce blows from the first round with Tanaka getting the better of the Venezuelan, the silver medalist at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, throughout the bout.

In the men’s middleweight division, Japan’s Yuito Moriwaki won by a 3-2 split decision over Seyidshahin Mousavi of Iran.

While Moriwaki got off to a good start by sticking out left jabs, the left-handed Mousavi rallied from the second round with his left punches. But the 188-cm Moriwaki managed to suppress the Iranian’s attack in the third and final round for victory.
