New state of emergency against COVID-19, if declared, may shorten end of boxing events

Apr 20, 2021 11:39 am

The Japan Boxing Commission and Japan Pro Boxing Association agreed at their Apr. 19 liaison meeting on measures fighting against the resurgence of novel coronaviruses that if the central government declares a fresh state of emergency in Osaka Prefecture, the end of future boxing events in the area should be 8 p.m. instead of the present 9 p.m.

The JBC and JPBA also discussed the matter of Tokyo’s RK Kamata Boxing Family Gym head Kazuhiro Ryuko’s alleged intimidation of JBC staff during weigh-ins at a hospital in Tokyo last month, which had initially led the JBC to impose a three-month suspension on Ryuko as the owner of the gym.

However, both sides agreed to study the matter from scratch considering various things surrounding the matter, and Ryoko’s suspension was dropped for the time being.

This is while Ryoko is said to have intimidated the JBC staff at the Makita General Hospital in Kamata on March 10, the JBC imposed the sanction in a unilateral manner, according to the JPBA.

The JPBA said the suspension is too severe since Ryuko denied such intimidation and was not even given an opportunity to give his views. At that time, Ryuko was acting in the capacity of the JPBA’s head of health administration at the hospital.
