Inoue kayos Butler in 11th round, becomes undisputed world bantamweight champion

Dec 14, 2022 1:20 am

World Boxing Association ‘’super,’’ International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym, unleashing a barrage of left-and-right combinations, knocked out World Boxing Organization bantamweight kingpin Paul Butler of Britain in the 11th round on Dec. 13 and became the undisputed world bantamweight champion in Tokyo.

With the win, the 29-year-old Inoue became the undisputed champion for the first time not only in Japan but also in Asia and ninth in the world’s history.

The end of the scheduled 12-rounder at capacity crowd Ariake Arena came 1 minute and 9 seconds into the round when Inoue attacked Butler with a variety of punches, including a devastating straight right to the body followed by left hooks to the head and body, which sent his 34-year-old opponent crumpling to the canvas for the count.

After the fight, Inoue said, ‘’Now that I have conquered the titles of all the four sanctioning bodies, I am thinking about moving up in weight to super bantamweight. When I was a (WBO) super flyweight champion, it has been my target. I had to take the long way around due to (various) regulations of each sanctioning body. But the day Dec. 13 became a great day for me.’’

After a relatively quiet start, Inoue stepped up his offense from the second round with Butler keeping his guard tight while moving side-to-side quickly.

Since defensive-minded Butler did not throw many punches, Inoue switched to a southpaw stance in the sixth round and dropped his guard invitingly in the seventh. In the eighth stanza, Inoue tried to provoke Butler by putting both hands behind his own back.

Inoue desperately moved forward and put Butler against the ropes while landing left hooks to the body and straight rights to the head in the 10th round, setting the stage for his all-out offense in the 11th round.

With the victory, Inoue has 24 straight wins, including 21 KOs. For his part, Butler has a record of 34 wins, including 15 knockouts, against three losses.
