Undefeated Andy Hiraoka of Ohashi Boxing Gym stopped Cristiano Aoqui of Kadoebi Boxing Gym in the 10th round and retained the World Boxing Organization’s Asia-Pacific super lightweight title and the Japanese title of the same weight division on Feb. 28 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall.
The technical knockout of the scheduled 12-rounder came 2 minutes and 16 seconds into the round when the left-handed Hiraoka, 25, connected with a counter left, sending Aoqui, the top-ranked Japanese super lightweight, down face first. The referee stopped the fight without bothering to count.
It was Hiraoka’s first successful defense of the titles he captured last October by stopping Jin Sasaki of Hachioji Nakaya Boxing Gym.
After the fight, Hiraoka, who is ranked sixth in the division by the International Boxing Federation, said, ‘’I could not fight my kind of fight because I was too conscious of a world title challenge. I am chagrined. I will get a fresh start.’’ Hiraoka was later sent to a hospital due to the symptom of dehydration.
Up until the stoppage, Hiraoka controlled the fight in the first half based on his favorite straight lefts while Aoqui rallied in the latter part by forcing Hiraoka against the ropes frequently.
With the victory, Hiraoka extended his unbeaten streak to 19, including 14 KOs. For his part, the 33-year-old Aoqui, who has Japanese-Brazilian ancestry, dropped to a 16-9-2 win-loss-draw tally with 11 KOs.
