Defunct JBC eyes resurrection as legal body thru drastic personnel change

Jun 03, 2022 15:03 pm

Japan Boxing Commission, which was defunct last March due to financial problems, said on June 2 that it will have a resurgence as a general incorporated foundation by conducting a drastic personnel change.
Minoru Hagiwara, a corporate advisor of Tokyo Dome Corp., will replace Yuhei Nagata as JBC’s executive head while Nobuaki Uratani, an executive officer of JBC, will resign, according sources close to the newly born JBC.

JBC issued a statement to the effect that it will try its best to gain trust from the public as early as possible. To achieve this, we will assume unwavering resolve to better our financial difficulties and business administration system.

JBC dissolved itself on March 31this year due to its financial deterioration caused by a rapid drop in the number of pro boxing fights due chiefly to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

To make matters worse, JBC gave up its appeal to the Supreme Court concerning the damages suit filed by the so-called ‘’three Kameda boxing brothers’’ and a firm promoting their fights.

The Tokyo High Court on Feb. 24 upheld the lower court decision and ordered JBC to pay 100.1 million yen (about 771,000 U.S. dollars) as damages incurred by the Kameda side.

Established in 1952, JBC has overseen professional bouts in the country for 70 years as a neutral and fair organization. But in recent years, its credibility has been shaken by such matters as JBC’s slipshod management of its doping inspection involving World Boxing Organization super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka’s title defense on New Year’s Eve of 2020.
