Undefeated World Boxing Organization flyweight champion Junto Nakatani of M.T Boxing Gym eyes the possibility of fighting at the super featherweight in the final analysis as he told reporters at the gym on Apr. 10 following his successful title defense against Ryota Yamauchi of Kadoebi Boxing Gym on the previous night.
The 24-year-old Nakatani stopped second-ranked Yamauchi in the eighth round at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama Prefecture to retain the title for the second time. The fight served as the chief supporting card for the title unification match between World Boxing Association ‘’super’’ middleweight champion Ryota Murata and International Boxing Federation kingpin Gennadiy Gennadyevich Golovkin of Kazakhstan, known as GGG.
Since it was held immediately before the Murata-GGG showdown, Nakatani received three times more messages on the Internet than usual. ‘’I am honored that I was able to fight before the big match,’’ he said.
Asked about the fight with Yamauchi, southpaw Nakatani humbly said, ‘’It was about 50 points (out of the maximum 100 points). I had a lot of things that I have to reflect on.’’
According to Nakatani, there were some moments where he lost his concentration. ‘’I want to correct that from now on,’’ he added.
While Nakatani did not deny the possibility of remaining at the flyweight division (112 pounds) if title unification offers come in from other champion or champions of the remaining sanctioning bodies, he said, ‘’If possible, I want to move up in weight to super flyweight (115 lbs.).’’ The 171-centimeter-tall Nakatani thinks he can fight better at the super flyweight because of his less weight-reduction effort.
In this connection, he mentioned the name of WBA ‘’super’’ and World Boxing Council Franchise champion Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico. ‘’I always adore the WBC championship belt,’’ Nakatani added.
What surprised us most is his response to the question ‘’Until which division do you think you can move up to?’’ Nakatani said, ‘’Considering my height, I think I can win a world title at super featherweight, and I will make further effort to achieve that.’’
