Panya-Yudai Shigeoka WBC minimumweight title fight on Apr. 16 cancelled due to Panya’s illness

Apr 05, 2023 10:22 am

The scheduled title fight between World Boxing Council minimumweight champion Panya Pradabsri of Thailand and third-ranked challenger Yudai Shigeoka of Watanabe Boxing Gym on Apr. 16 at Tokyo’s Yoyogi National 2nd Gymnasium was cancelled as Panya has caught the flue, the promoter of the fight said on Apr. 4.

According to Koki Kameda, who was promoting the fight as part of the ‘’3150FIGHTVol.5’’ boxing series, the Panya side conveyed the message to Kameda around 4:30 p.m. on Apr. 3 to the effect that Panya will have to get a 10-day rest after he has been discharged from the hospital to which he was admitted on Apr. 2.

The medical certificate concerned and a picture of Panya lying down on a bed were attached, according to Kameda.

Kameda said, ‘’We will look for a world-ranked boxer so that we can have him fight with Yiudai, the elder brother of Ginjiro Shigeoka who will compete in the International Boxing federation minimumweight world interim title fight in the same event, if there is even a one-percent chance.’’

Kameda is seeking an alternative boxer while attempting to get the WBC’s approval for Yudai competing in an interim world title, although he is not sure at this point in time.

In this connection, Watanabe said, ‘’He (Yudai) has agreed to take part in the interim fight with another boxer.’’ But In case the worst scenario comes out (no world interim title fight is approved), Watanabe said he has not talked to him whether he still wants to take part even in a nontitle fight.’’
